The Tiger Who Came to Tea - Book Extention Activity

Tigers are Oak’s favorite animal, so of course when he spotted a tiger book in the stack of library books he was so excited to read it! I told him we had to wait until we had a tea party to read it though. Oak had seen me flipping through some recipe books recently and had seen a Carrot Zucchini bread that he really wanted to make. I asked him if he wanted to make that for our tea party snack and he was very excited about it!

The Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr is a cute book about a little girl and her mom who are having a tea party when a tiger knocks at the door. Then the tiger eats all of their food so they have nothing left to feed their dad for dinner. They go out to eat at a restaurant and buy some tiger food so that they are prepared the next time the tiger comes to visit.

1. Cook a yummy snack

We made Carrot Zucchini bread, but you could make any tea party snack - cookies, biscuits, muffins, whatever you’d like! Learning how to crack eggs, measure, dump, and stir are such important life skills for the littles to learn! After we were done cooking and the bread was in the over I talked to Oak about how cleaning up is an important part of cooking so he helped me clean up all of our dirty dishes and put away all of the ingredients. Oak took such pride in the delicious bread that he made.

2. Learn to spell tiger (and maybe some other t words)

With our bread in the oven, I got out our magnet letters while we waited so we could practice spelling T words. Oak decided he didn’t just want to spell tiger, he wanted to spell out the whole book title.

3. Have a tea party

When our bread was done cooking it was time for our tea party! We got out the tea cups and the tiny plates and the milk. While we ate, we read the book. Then we spent some time talking about it.

4. Act it out

Since you already have your tea party, all you need is your tiger! Oak loved pretending to eat all of the food. Our realistic tiger figure is from this set and we have and we’ve been really happy with the quality.

Oak decided that it was such.a good book that he wanted to read it to his brother, so he had fun “reading” the book to Levi a few more times that night. It was so sweet.
