Who Sank the Boat - Book Extension Activities
We read Who Sank the Boat by Pamela Allen this week. This is a silly book about a bunch of animal friends who squeeze onto a boat and * SPOILER ALERT * the tiny little mouse is the one who finally sinks the boat. Here are some activities we did that day!
1. Act Out the Story As You Read
My kids loved lining the animals up to wait their turn and then finding each animal to load on the boat!
Here’s what you need for this one:
Cow
Donkey
Sheep
Pig
Mouse
Boat
2. Sink Or Float Science Experiment
Materials
Bowl of water
Some objects to test (here are some ideas - paper clip, coin, lid, straw, stick, leaf, acorn, bean, etc.)
We sorted objects into things that floated and things that didn’t. This is a good lead into the next activity since you must know what floats to build a boat!
3. Build a Boat
Materials
I like to let the kids be creative with this! Some things you might consider using are Popsicle Sticks, Straws, Lids, Sponges, Paper, Sticks, Egg Carton, Cardboard, Water Bottles
Tape - to stick your boat together
After you’ve built your boat, you can have a boat race by blowing them with straws. Or you could try to sink your boat by adding weight to it.
4. Row Your Boat Song
We like this version from Old Town School of Folk Music that has additional actions like bounce your boat and twist your boat. Then you can think up more actions if your toddler is really into it! Sometimes we like to hold something that we can pretend is an oar, like a fly swatter or a paper towel tube.
