Our Preschool Group: Birds

Each kid got a bag with feather, bird, beak object. and 2 scarves.

I everyone to find the feather in their bag for our first activity. We read Feathers Not Just for Flying by Melissa Stewart. While we read, we pretended that our feather was the different things it talked about in the book. Like when it compared a feather to a blanket we pretended our feather was a blanket by putting it on our laps. And when it compared a feather to a backhoe, we pretended to dig a hole with our feather.

After our feather book, I told everyone to find the scarves in their bag. We sang Two Little Blackbirds Song and held one scarf in each hand to pretend it was a bird.

Two Little Blackbirds

Two little blackbirds sitting on a hill.
One named Jack and one named Jill. (Raise one hand as you say each name)
Fly away Jack, fly away Jill. (Move one hand behind our back as you say each name)
Come back Jack, come back Jill. (Move one hand back in front of you as you say each name)

Two little blackbirds flying in the sky.
One named Low and one named High
Fly away Low, fly away High
Come back Low, come back High.

Two little blackbirds sitting on a pole.
One named Fast and one named Slow
Fly away Fast, fly away Slow.
Come back Fast, come back Slow.

Two little blackbirds sitting on a cloud.
One named Quiet, one named Loud
Fly away Quiet, fly away Loud.
Come back Quiet, come back Loud.

I had each kid pull out the object and the bird in their bag. We read A Peak at Beaks by Kate Slater and each kid looked for their bird and beak object in the book.

We passed out something to represent a beak to each kid and they had to try to serve themself some snack with that type of beak. We had a knife, a colander, tweezers, and an eye dropper. Afterward, we talked about how different types of beaks could pick certain foods easier that others and how birds have different types of beaks that are good for picking up what they eat.

We took a short walk to look for birds. When we got back to the house we passed out plastic eggs filled with rice and. taped shut. We shook them and danced to the Shakey Egg Song.

We finished the day building nests with blankets and putting plastic bird figures (from Safari LTD toobs) into easter eggs.
