Math Picture Books - Our Favorites

It was actually my 4-year-old who discovered that there are some amazing math books out there that can help make math more fun! Math books have become an important part of our homeschooling. Here are a few of our favorite math books we’ve come across.

Anno’s Counting Book by Mitsumasa Anno There are tons of counting books out there but this one is particularly cool. It is about the first year for a new town that starts with one house, then has two, then three, etc. The only word on each page is the number so we had fun studying the beautiful pictures on each page to figure out what was happening in the story.

The Mission of Addition by Brian Cleary This book is a great introduction to basic addition. We covered up the answers and tried to solve each equation as we read. We used counters and cups to recreate the equation and then dump them together. This book can help visualize written math problems.

The Action of Subtraction by Brian Cleary This book is a great introduction to basic subtraction. We cover up the answers to try to solve each equation as we read and use our fingers as counters to help us solve them.

Monster Math School Time by Grace Maccarone We used our Learning Resources clock as we read this book to match the time on the monsters’ clock. We talked about the difference between the second and hour hand. There are extension activity ideas at the back of the book such as make your own time book about what you do all day.

Probably Pistachio by Stuart Murphy This book introduces concepts like usually, sometimes, and nearly always as a boy goes about his day - unfortunately, nothing seems to be going right for him. Oak loved this book! There are extension activity ideas at the back of the book including a probability game.

Triangles by David Adler Grab your ruler and pencil because this book introduces different types of triangles, parts of a triangle, measuring angles, and similar and congruent shapes. We had fun searching for triangles to identify around our house after reading this book and practicing our triangle drawing skills.

On the Scale, A Weighty Tale by Brian Cleary This book introduces essential units of measure including grams, pounds, and tons, After reading this book we pulled out our scale to play with weights.

Circle, Square, and Triangle (The Shapes Trilogy) by Mac Barnett. Oak LOVES these books. They’re about the adventures of three shapes who are friends. We enjoyed drawing pictures with shapes.

Perimeter, Area, and Volume by David Adler This book covers concepts like two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes, length, width, height, perimeter, area, and volume. We pulled out our measuring tape and measured all sorts of stuff around the house.

Monster Knows More Than, Less Than by Lori Capote This book introduces the basics of more than and less than.

Monster Math Money by Grace Maccarone We read this book with our fake money and Oak followed along with various combinations of ways to make 10 cents.

Anno’s Math Games by Mitsumasa Anno Picture puzzles, games, and simple activities to introduce math concepts of multiplication, sequence and ordinal numbering, measurement, and direction.
