Before and After: Our Basement Built-In

We love board games and our collection has gotten quite large over the years. We had an idea for a huge built-in. We didn’t feel comfortable building our own cabinets so we looked at various options that we could piece together. We decided to piece together 9 Ikea Brimnes cabinets to create a built-in that would fill the whole wall. These cabinets have glass doors so you can easily see what is in the cabinets, but the stuff inside doesn’t get covered in dust. We took measurements and taped the whole thing out on the wall to make sure we liked where it was going.

We installed the cabinets sitting on top of a wood frame so that we could fit a baseboard around the bottom and anchored them to the wall. Then we built frames up to the ceiling on top of the cabinets to house the wires for some beautiful cabinet lighting. We used shiplap and trim to finish the sides of the cabinets and the TV area in the middle of the built-in. Because the room is so big and there is so much natural light we decided to paint the walls the same color as the cabinets to make the cabinets feel really built-in and make the room feel more cozy.
